Monja Ebisen Shibuya: A Unique Weekday Hamburger Lunch in Shibuya

スポンサーリンク

If you are looking for a convenient lunch in Shibuya, why not try something a little different from the usual Japanese restaurants?

I recently visited Monja Ebisen Shibuya Stream, a restaurant located on the 2nd floor of Shibuya Stream, just a short walk from Shibuya Station.

The restaurant specializes in monjayaki, a popular Japanese teppanyaki dish similar to okonomiyaki, with a unique focus on shrimp-based dashi.

However, during weekday lunch hours, the restaurant offers something quite unexpected: a Japanese-style hamburger set meal.

I visited on a weekday and was able to enter without waiting.

In this article, I’ll share my experience at Monja Ebisen Shibuya Stream, including the restaurant atmosphere, how the lunch system works, what is included in the meal, and what I thought of the food.

A Hamburger Set Meal at a Monjayaki Restaurant?

When you hear the name Monja Ebisen, you might expect to find monjayaki and other Japanese teppanyaki dishes.

But the weekday lunch menu at the Shibuya Stream location is quite different.

The main lunch option is an Aarabiki Hamburger Set Meal, featuring two juicy, coarsely ground hamburger patties along with several Japanese-style side dishes.

It is an unusual combination, but that is also what makes this lunch interesting.

If you are visiting Shibuya and want to try something beyond the typical ramen, sushi, or curry, this could be a fun option.

The weekday lunch is available from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM.

Since the lunch is limited in quantity, it is a good idea to arrive with enough time if you specifically want to try it.

What Is Included in the ¥1,490 Hamburger Set Meal?

I ordered the Aarabiki Hamburger Set Meal, priced at ¥1,490.

The meal comes with:

  • Two hamburger patties
  • Three types of salad
  • Potato salad
  • Japanese rolled omelet (dashimaki tamago)
  • Steamed rice
  • Miso soup

Another nice feature is that rice and miso soup can be refilled.

For ¥1,490 in central Shibuya, I thought the meal offered a generous amount of food.

The combination of a Western-style hamburger with traditional Japanese side dishes also makes this lunch quite unique.

How Does the Lunch System Work?

One of the interesting things about this lunch is that it uses a self-service style.

After being shown to your table, a staff member explains how the lunch system works.

You then take a tray and lunch plate and start assembling your meal.

First, you serve yourself rice, miso soup, and three types of salad.

Next, you receive the freshly cooked hamburger patties and choose your sauce.

Finally, you receive the Japanese rolled omelet and your lunch plate is complete.

It is a fun way to build your own lunch plate, and you can refill the rice and miso soup if you are still hungry.

Fresh Salads, Potato Salad and Japanese Rolled Omelet

The hamburger is the main attraction, but the side dishes are also worth trying.

There are three types of salad, and I enjoyed the fresh taste of the vegetables together with the slightly tangy dressing.

The potato salad was particularly enjoyable.

It contains pieces of onion, adding a pleasant crunch to the soft potatoes.

The dashimaki tamago, a Japanese rolled omelet made with dashi stock, was another highlight.

It has a soft, almost melt-in-your-mouth texture, with the flavor of dashi coming through nicely.

It was a great contrast to the meaty hamburger.

Shrimp-Flavored Miso Soup

The miso soup has a noticeable shrimp flavor.

Since the restaurant specializes in shrimp-based dashi, it was a nice touch to find that same seafood flavor in the lunch set.

It gives the meal a distinctly Japanese character, even though the main dish is a hamburger.

If you enjoy seafood flavors, this is something worth paying attention to.

Juicy Coarsely Ground Hamburgers with Two Unique Sauces

The hamburger patties have a satisfying, meaty texture and are juicy when you bite into them.

You can enjoy them on their own, but the sauces are what make this hamburger especially interesting.

I tried two sauces:

  • Fresh Tomato Salsa
  • Spicy Shrimp Tartar Sauce

Fresh Tomato Salsa

The tomato salsa has a refreshing acidity that works very well with the juicy hamburger.

It prevents the dish from feeling too heavy and leaves a clean, refreshing finish.

If you prefer a lighter and more refreshing flavor, I would recommend this sauce.

Spicy Shrimp Tartar Sauce

The Spicy Shrimp Tartar Sauce has a completely different character.

It is thick and rich, with a texture somewhat similar to a curry sauce.

The shrimp flavor is particularly strong and fills your mouth with a rich seafood taste.

It also pairs very well with steamed rice.

For me, this was one of the most distinctive parts of the meal because it brings the restaurant’s shrimp-focused concept into the hamburger.

Is ¥1,490 Good Value for Lunch in Shibuya?

Shibuya has plenty of restaurants, but finding a filling lunch for around ¥1,500 can still be a challenge, especially if you want a complete set meal.

For ¥1,490, this lunch includes two hamburger patties, several side dishes, Japanese rolled omelet, rice, and miso soup.

Rice and miso soup can also be refilled.

Considering the amount of food and the variety of dishes, I felt that this was a satisfying lunch option in Shibuya.

If you are looking for an affordable lunch in Shibuya and want something more interesting than a standard set meal, Monja Ebisen is worth considering.

Is Monja Ebisen Good for Solo Lunch?

The restaurant is also suitable for a casual solo lunch.

There are counter seats as well as larger tables, making it possible to enjoy the meal whether you are traveling alone or visiting Shibuya with friends.

The lunch menu is simple, so you do not need to spend a long time deciding what to order.

The self-service system is also straightforward once the staff explains how it works.

When I visited on a weekday, I was able to enter without waiting.

However, the situation can vary depending on the day and time, so keep in mind that the restaurant may be busier during peak hours.

The ¥1,490 set includes two hamburger patties, salads, potato salad, Japanese rolled omelet, rice, and miso soup, with rice and miso soup available for refills.

What stood out to me most was the combination of the juicy hamburger with the restaurant’s distinctive shrimp-based flavors.

The shrimp-flavored miso soup and the rich Spicy Shrimp Tartar Sauce give the meal a character that you won’t find at a typical hamburger restaurant.
