Are you looking for a guaranteed hit local lunch in Oimachi, Shinagawa Ward?
Today, we introduce Maruhachi Tonkatsu Honten, a long-established restaurant founded in 1955 (Showa 30) that has been selected multiple times for the prestigious 100 Famous Restaurants list.
We stepped through the noren curtains of this beloved local store to taste their signature Standard Pork Cutlet Set (Nami Katsu Teishoku).
From the atmosphere of the restaurant to the detailed menu and their pleasant hospitality, we will report its charm in full.

What is the atmosphere of Maruhachi Tonkatsu Honten like? Is it easy to enter alone?

As you pass through the noren, a warm, Japanese-style space made of wood unfolds.
The 1st floor has 15 counter seats surrounding the kitchen. The distance to the kitchen is very close, so you can watch the professional craftsmanship of the chefs frying the cutlets right in front of you, meaning you won’t get bored waiting.
There are also tatami mat seats on the 2nd floor, making it comfortable for groups and families with children.

I visited around 12:00 PM on a weekday during the lunch peak.
Although the restaurant was almost full, we were able to enter smoothly without lining up that day.
This lively yet calm atmosphere is perfect for a solo lunch in Oimachi.

Tasting the excellent value Standard Cutlet Set! Shocked by the tenderness that melts in your mouth

Pickled vegetables (Oshinko) are served as soon as you take a seat.
They have a very strong, delicious crunch.
After waiting a few minutes while snacking on this, the long-awaited Standard Cutlet Set arrives!

The Cutlet of otherworldly tenderness

Taking a bite, you are surprised by the crispiness of the batter and the juiciness of the meat.
It is so tender that it makes you think, Is this really just the standard cutlet?!
It feels as if it melts and disappears in your mouth.
The sauce is not too overpowering and brings out the flavor of the cutlet perfectly.
Eating it with mustard also provides a great accent.

It made me wonder, If the standard is this good, how tender must the premium loin cutlet be…

The fresh and radiant Cabbage

The cabbage, exquisitely shredded to have a fluffy texture, is incredibly crunchy and fresh.
With every bite, the sweetness comes out, and it pairs perfectly with the sauce.
It was so delicious that I instinctively asked for a refill.
