Looking for one of the best ramen restaurants near Tokyo Station?

Fuunji Tokyo Ramen Yokocho is the Tokyo Station branch of the legendary ramen shop that has long lines at its original Shinjuku location. Famous for its rich chicken and seafood dipping noodles (tsukemen), it’s a must-visit for ramen lovers.

In this review, I’ll share my actual visit on a Sunday lunchtime, including the waiting time, menu, taste, and whether it’s worth visiting instead of the famous Shinjuku store.

If you’re planning to eat at Tokyo Ramen Yokocho, this guide has everything you need to know.

What is Fuunji Tokyo Ramen Yokocho?

Fuunji is one of Tokyo’s most famous ramen restaurants, originally located in Shinjuku.

Its signature dish is tsukemen (Japanese dipping noodles) served with an incredibly rich double soup made from creamy chicken broth and flavorful seafood stock.

The soup is slowly prepared using whole Japanese chicken, chicken bones, kombu seaweed, bonito flakes, dried sardines, and other premium ingredients.

The Tokyo Station branch is located inside Tokyo Ramen Yokocho, making it a perfect stop before catching the Shinkansen or exploring Tokyo.

Unlike the original Shinjuku store, the waiting time here is usually much shorter.

Sunday Waiting Time & Crowd Level

I visited on Sunday at 12:10 PM.

There were only four people waiting outside.
Before joining the line, customers first purchase a meal ticket from the vending machine and hand it to the staff.

I entered the restaurant at 12:18 PM, meaning I waited only about 8 minutes.

Compared with the original Shinjuku location, where waiting over 30 minutes is common, this was surprisingly fast.

However, by the time I finished eating, the line had grown to around 10 people, showing just how popular this restaurant is during lunchtime.

My experience

  • Visit: Sunday, 12:10 PM
  • People waiting: About 4
  • Wait time: Around 8 minutes
  • When leaving: About 10 people in line

My Fuunji Tsukemen Review

I ordered the restaurant’s most popular dish:

Special Tsukemen (¥1,300).

The first thing that impressed me was the soup.

It’s incredibly rich, but not heavy.

Instead of being overly salty, the broth has a smooth, balanced flavor packed with seafood umami that keeps you wanting another bite.

The noodles are thick, straight noodles made from Japanese wheat.

They’re wonderfully chewy and perfectly coated in the rich dipping broth.

Hidden beneath the soup are generous chunks of pork chashu that become incredibly tender after soaking in the broth.

Toppings

  • Fish powder
  • Nori seaweed
  • Green onions
  • Chashu pork

I ordered the large size, but honestly, even the regular portion should satisfy most people.

How to Enjoy Fuunji Tsukemen

The counter includes instructions on the restaurant’s recommended way to eat tsukemen.

1. Dip Lightly

Rather than soaking the noodles completely, dip about two-thirds of the noodles into the soup.

This allows you to enjoy both the flavor of the noodles and the rich broth.

2. Change the Flavor

If you’d like a different taste halfway through your meal, add:

  • Black pepper
  • Japanese chili powder (Shichimi)

Some regular customers even sprinkle black pepper directly on the noodles.

3. Finish with Soup-Wari

After finishing the noodles, ask for soup-wari, a light broth added to your remaining dipping sauce.

It’s a traditional way to enjoy every last drop of the delicious soup.
