Located in the trendy Nakameguro neighborhood, this four-story flagship store is one of only a handful of Starbucks Reserve Roasteries worldwide.
More than just a coffee shop, it’s an immersive destination where visitors can watch coffee being roasted, enjoy exclusive drinks and food, shop for limited-edition merchandise, and explore beautifully designed spaces inspired by Japanese craftsmanship.
During my recent visit, I experienced the waiting system, explored every floor, tried some of the most popular menu items, and discovered a few insider tips that first-time visitors should know.

What Is Starbucks Reserve® Roastery Tokyo?

Opened in February 2019, Starbucks Reserve® Roastery Tokyo is one of Starbucks’ most prestigious flagship locations.
Unlike a regular Starbucks store, this massive four-story building offers:
- On-site coffee roasting
- Exclusive Reserve-only beverages
- TEAVANA™ tea experiences
- Fresh Italian bakery items from PRINCI®
- Limited-edition merchandise
- A cocktail bar serving coffee-inspired drinks
- Seasonal views of the famous Nakameguro cherry blossoms
It is often described as a “coffee theme park” rather than a traditional café.
Visiting on a Saturday: 63 Groups Ahead but Only a 15-Minute Wait

I visited on a Saturday at approximately 3:30 PM.
Upon arrival, the store was using a waiting ticket system, and there were already 63 groups ahead of me.
The sign estimated a waiting time of 30–45 minutes, but surprisingly, I was able to enter after only about 15 minutes.
The Roastery may issue two types of admission tickets depending on crowd levels:
- Timed-entry tickets
- Virtual queue waiting tickets
Keep in mind that these tickets only manage entry into the building—they do not reserve seating.
By around 5:30 PM, the queue had disappeared and visitors could enter freely without a ticket.
If possible, visiting later in the afternoon can help you avoid long waits.
The Biggest Challenge: Finding a Seat
Once inside, staff immediately advised me:
“Please find a seat before ordering.”
At first, I didn’t understand why.
Then I saw the crowd.
Nearly every table on all four floors was occupied.
I spent almost 10 minutes walking through the building—including the outdoor terraces—before finally finding an available seat.

My advice:
Secure a seat first, then order your food and drinks.
This will save you a lot of stress during busy periods.
The Stunning Copper Cask at the Center of the Building
The first thing that catches your eye is the enormous copper cask rising through all four floors.

Inspired by the cherry blossom trees lining the nearby Meguro River, this iconic structure serves as both a visual centerpiece and part of the coffee roasting system.
The combination of industrial engineering and Japanese craftsmanship makes the space feel more like an art installation than a coffee shop.
Even if you’re not a coffee enthusiast, it’s worth visiting just to see the architecture.

What I Ordered: Recommended Menu Items

I purchased food from PRINCI® on the first floor and drinks from TEAVANA™ on the second floor.

One thing to note:
TEAVANA orders can take quite a while during busy periods.
My drink took approximately 20 minutes to prepare.
If you’re planning to order both food and drinks, consider ordering your tea first.
Iced Matcha Tea Latte

This was easily my favorite drink of the day.
Prepared using freshly stone-ground Japanese matcha, the drink offers a rich and authentic flavor that is difficult to find elsewhere.
The balance between sweetness and deep matcha notes is exceptional.
If you’re visiting for the first time, this is the drink I recommend most.
Tropical Adventure Tea

A refreshing tea featuring fruity aromas and delicate tea flavors.
The taste is light and elegant rather than overly sweet.
Perfect for visitors who want to experience Starbucks’ premium tea program.
Focaccia Pizza Margherita

Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, the focaccia base is incredibly satisfying.
The combination of rich cheese and tomato creates a simple but delicious flavor profile.
Highly recommended for cheese lovers.
Brioche Sandwich with Prosciutto & Parmigiano

Packed with premium Italian prosciutto and Parmigiano cheese, this sandwich was surprisingly filling.
It makes an excellent lunch option and offers great value considering the quality of the ingredients.

Don’t Miss the Limited Merchandise and Kurumicco
The Roastery offers an impressive collection of exclusive mugs, tumblers, and souvenirs that cannot be purchased at ordinary Starbucks locations.
One unexpected highlight was Kurumicco, a famous caramel walnut pastry from Kamakura.

This popular Japanese souvenir often sells out elsewhere, but it is frequently available here.
Special Starbucks-themed packaging makes it an excellent gift.
